The Women's Freedom League (WFL) was founded in 1907 by Charlotte Despard, Edith How Martyn, Teresa Billington Greig, and others, as a breakaway group from the Women's Social and Political Union. The WFL campaigned for women's suffrage using non-violent, militant methods such as not paying taxes (which led to the formation of the Women's Tax Resistance League) and encouraging women to spoil or not complete their census forms in April 1911. Its journal was 'The Vote' (1909-1933) which became 'The Bulletin' (1933-1961). The WFL continued to campaign for women's equality and remained active until 1961. The organisation was dissolved following the death of its final president, Marian Reeves, who had joined the League in 1909.
